OpenAI Integrates Codeex into ChatGPT App, Sparking Developer Discontent

OpenAI has announced a significant overhaul of its application ecosystem, integrating the popular Codeex developer app directly into the main ChatGPT application. This strategic move, branded as the “ChatGPT Work” experience, aims to unify user interfaces and expose Codeex’s powerful capabilities, such as advanced computer use and agentic workflows, to a broader audience beyond developers. The update introduces new features like “Co-work” for non-developer tasks, unified plugin management across ChatGPT and Codeex functionalities, and substantial improvements to computer use, including multi-tab browser support and enterprise authentication. Additionally, the standalone Atlas browser has been sunset, and users can opt to retain the familiar Codeex app icon within the new integrated environment. Performance enhancements, including reduced heat output and more reliable mobile connections, are also part of the refresh.

This integration, however, has been met with considerable disappointment and confusion within the developer community. Codeex had fostered a strong, dedicated following and established a distinct brand identity, often perceived as a developer-centric alternative or competitor to other tools like Claude Code. Many developers expressed concern that folding Codeex into the general ChatGPT app will dilute its specialized focus, potentially leading to the de-prioritization of features crucial for coding workflows. The historic ambiguity surrounding the “Codeex” name—which has been used for a model, a CLI, and an app—further complicates the branding landscape. Critics argue that OpenAI has underestimated the loyalty and specific needs of its developer base, who valued Codeex precisely for its independent, dedicated nature. The timing coincides with internal organizational shifts, including the move of Fidji Simo, previously CEO of Applications, to an advisory role due to health reasons, potentially highlighting broader challenges in OpenAI’s application strategy.
