Mark Richards Unveils Transactional Sagas: A Comprehensive Framework for Distributed Architecture Design

Mark Richards recently introduced ‘transactional sagas,’ a framework developed with Neil Ford and detailed in their book ‘Software Architecture: The Hard Parts.’ This framework addresses the complexity of distributed architecture design by categorizing systems based on three ‘primal forces’: communication (synchronous or asynchronous), coordination (orchestration or choreography), and transactional consistency (atomic or eventual). Richards emphasizes that these forces are ‘co-joined,’ meaning decisions in one area profoundly impact the others, leading to eight distinct architectural combinations, each metaphorically named after a type of story.

Richards outlined each of the eight sagas, ranging from the ‘Epic Saga’ (synchronous, orchestrated, atomic) to the ‘Anthology Saga’ (asynchronous, choreographed, eventual consistency), which boasts high scalability and loose coupling. Notably, the ‘Horror Story Saga’ (asynchronous, choreographed, atomic) was initially considered theoretical by the authors due to its extreme complexity, yet it was later discovered in production environments. The transactional sagas framework provides architects with a powerful tool to simplify design choices, enabling them to map desired characteristics, such as responsiveness or scalability, directly to specific saga patterns and understand the inherent trade-offs involved in distributed system development.
