The internet’s genesis traces back to the ‘sneakernet’ era, where physical transport of data tapes was the fastest network. This changed fundamentally after the 1957 Sputnik launch prompted the US government to establish ARPA. Facing the military challenge of maintaining command and control links post-nuclear strike, Paul Baran at the Rand Corporation conceived packet switching. This revolutionary method diced messages into independent packets, each finding its own route through a resilient network, ensuring communication integrity even with partial link failures. In 1969, ARPA realized this concept as ARPANET, which, despite a minor hiccup during its first “login” attempt, quickly connected 15 computers by 1971.
