Antropic's Claude Unveils AI-Powered 'Claude Design' for Web, App, and System Generation

Antropic’s Claude platform has unveiled “Claude Design,” a new feature currently in research preview, aiming to empower both technical and non-technical users with an AI-driven visual design environment. This “Canva-like” tool extends Claude’s capabilities beyond code generation, offering an interactive canvas for creating and iterating on designs for websites, mobile applications, presentations, animations, and even comprehensive design systems. Users can initiate designs from text prompts, image uploads (including Figma files and GitHub repositories for design system generation), or even freehand sketches. The platform introduces “skills” (e.g., “interactive prototype”) to guide the AI, allowing for a more structured and refined design process through a series of contextual questions, moving beyond basic static generations. Initial demonstrations showcase the creation of high-fidelity prototypes, such as e-commerce sites with interactive elements and mobile app login flows.

Claude Design offers an intuitive visual editor for post-generation refinement, including “Twix” for color scheme adjustments, “Comman” for adding dynamic elements like modals, and direct manipulation of backgrounds, fonts, and text sizes. The “Draw” feature allows users to sketch modifications directly on the canvas, which the AI then interprets and applies. Designs can be previewed interactively and exported in various formats such as HTML, ZIP archives, PDF, PowerPoint, or even directly to Canva. While direct HTML export currently focuses on the active page, full project downloads are available, and projects can be seamlessly integrated into local Claude Code environments. The platform also supports team collaboration with sharing and commenting functionalities. Its comprehensive approach, particularly the generation of interactive components and design systems, positions Claude Design as a potential competitor or alternative to existing visual development platforms. Its future trajectory—either as a standalone offering with its own subscription model or integrated as a core feature within Claude Desktop—is yet to be determined by Antropic.
