Anthropic Bolsters Compute with SpaceX Deal, Elevates Claude Usage Limits
Anthropic has announced two pivotal developments set to significantly impact developers: increased usage limits for its Claude AI models and a substantial compute deal with SpaceX. The higher usage limits directly address a common pain point for developers, particularly those leveraging Claude Code, who frequently encountered restrictive thresholds compared to offerings like OpenAI’s Codex. This enhancement aims to provide greater headroom for the increasingly demanding, longer-running agentic sessions prevalent in modern AI workflows across coding, data science, and other fields, which lead to exponential token consumption.
The foundational enabler for these elevated limits is Anthropic’s compute partnership with SpaceX, securing the entire 300-megawatt capacity of xAI’s Colossus I data center—equivalent to over 200,000 NVIDIA GPUs. This immediate influx of computational power is crucial, as Anthropic, like many leading AI companies, has been heavily compute-constrained. While Anthropic has long-term agreements for up to 5 gigawatts with both Amazon (nearly 1GW by late 2026) and Google (beginning 2027), the SpaceX deal provides critical, readily available capacity now. xAI, a SpaceX subsidiary, made Colossus I available as it has since deployed its more powerful Colossus II cluster and is on a roadmap toward nearly two gigawatts of its own power by 2026, leveraging the otherwise unutilized capacity for revenue.
Beyond immediate capacity, the agreement also hints at future strategic alignment, with Anthropic expressing interest in partnering with SpaceX to develop “multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity.” While this orbital concept remains to be proven economically viable, it signals a potential long-term play for both entities and could offer a compelling narrative for a future SpaceX IPO. For Anthropic, expanding compute capacity and relaxing usage limits are also critical competitive moves in a rapidly evolving market, allowing them to better contend with rivals like OpenAI’s GPT-5.5/Codex and GitHub Copilot, fostering market share growth and establishing a base for future monetization of its growing service demand.
